Room 1 Music Class Spring 2023

From Ms Raff:

In music this semester we focused on melody. We used this song to learn about the music scale and practice solfege. A few students already knew the song in another language so you can hear a bit of that which I think is awesome! Please remind families not to share this outside of the school.

(MCS-Rm1) Shadow puppet project

In this unit, the students started with a warm up exercise where they each drew an insect from their memory.

Next, they were each given an insect specimen to observe with magnifying glass. As a class, they discussed the structure of an insect and then they learned to do observational drawing with an emphasis on proportion and details.

Later, the students were challenged to create their own never-before-seen insect. They chose their own level of complexity and decided whether to make changes to an observed insect or use their memory and imagination to create something completely new.

In the last step, Indonesian shadow puppet play was introduced to the students. They then learned to make puppets with moving parts, turning their imaginary insect characters into a creative shadow puppet play.

Objective:

-cut shapes to make hybrid animals/insects
-differentiate between geometric and freeform shapes
-create original artwork free from stereotypes
-write a creative story in pair or group to go with their created hybrid creatures -create artworks which reflect skills in conveying personal ideas, feelings and moods -Drama-act out various moods (with sound effects, develop dialogue)
-Develop storytelling and problem solving skills (Sequencing in the story)

The story, Mortimer, by Robert Munsch, helped students explore many musical concepts. It features several characters that speak in different registers of their voice, such as the mother (high head voice) and the policemen (low chest voice). Students practiced playing pitched percussion and going up and down by steps when the characters in the story traveled up and down the stairs. They performed a speech piece with xylophone to a steady beat when the main character in the story refused to go to sleep and instead chanted about "making noise all day." At the end of the story, students used the xylophone to create a soundscape that helped tell the story.
